Rockville MD | Dec 2024
On December 17-18, 2024, Dr. Xinhua Li and Dr. Mitch Zakin of Clear Scientific Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, presented a poster titled “A Broad-Spectrum Therapeutic as a Countermeasure Against Acute Opioid and Polydrug Intoxication” at the Advances in Developing Medical Countermeasures Against Opioids and Drug-Induced Respiratory Depression Conference in Rockville, Maryland. The growing public health and national security concerns surrounding the potential of mass casualty emergencies involving accidental or deliberate exposures to ultrapotent synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, carfentanil, nitazene, and potential mixtures, underscore the urgent need for more effective therapeutic strategies and medical countermeasures to save lives and mitigate the healthcare burden. This trans-agency meeting addressed basic and applied research advances in the field of opioid- and other drug-induced toxicities, as well as therapeutic strategies to address them, with a particular emphasis on reversing respiratory depression.
The poster described the benefits of CS-1103, Clear’s first-in-class sequestrant-based therapeutic for rapid treatment of opioid, stimulant, and polydrug intoxication, in the context of mass casualty emergencies. Mass casualty events are highly complex and chaotic, involving large numbers of victims, in which first responders get only one chance to save a victim’s life, and for which definitive care may be significantly delayed. CS-1103 immediately binds and inactivates threat agents, rapidly reversing their toxic effects (life-saving) and accelerates their clearance from the body – detoxification (life-sustaining) until definitive care is available.
About Clear Scientific
Clear Scientific, co-founded by Prof. George Whitesides of Harvard University, is pioneering a new paradigm for treatment of conditions and diseases that involve an excess of specific compounds in the body. This approach focuses on development of highly selective, small molecule sequestrants that bind, immediately inactivate, and rapidly clear excess compounds from the body.
